Traveling overseas often entails exchanging currency, but business travelers need to be aware of hidden costs and exchange fees. If possible, it often makes much more sense to purchase foreign currency before the actual trip. Language barriers can lead to additional confusion when attempting to draw out and exchange money, so making arrangements before the trip can help alleviate some of the stress that would otherwise be involved. Visa and MasterCard are often accepted in many locations as well, but travelers should refrain from using cash withdrawal features if at all possible due to the high charges that they will incur.

A medical emergency away from home may not be something that a person wants to think about, but the unfortunate truth is that family and friends could very well be unaware of a bad situation. It never hurts to make an emergency contact list and carry it in a wallet behind any other identification cards. Along with the emergency contacts, it’s also a good idea to include any drug allergies or medical conditions that an unfamiliar doctor should be aware of.

Dwelling on worst case scenarios is not productive, nor is it necessary. However, individuals should at least make the above preparations before leaving for their next business trip. The peace of mind is certainly worth the relatively small amount of effort required.
